The Rising and Resting Ceremony

Sensoji Honzon Jigene (The Rising and Resting Ceremony)

March 18th is considered as the birthday of the actual Asakusa.
Legend said that fishermen caught a small Kannon statue (Seikanze Onbosatsu) into their fishing net from the Sumida river in the 7th century (628 AD) . This small statue is preserved today inside of the Sensō-ji Temple.
The Rising and Resting is a 2 days ceremony. During the first day, called “Odo-Age”, 3 Honsha-Mikoshi (a kind of portable shrine) quit the Asakusa shrine to Sensoji temple to stay a night inside it. The second day, called “Odo-Sage”, these 3 Honsha-Mikoshi are returning back to their shrine after a parade through Asakusa.
The Rising and Resting Ceremony is also considered as the prologue of the Sanja Matsuri, held in May.
