Sanja Festival, is considered as one of the largest and wildest festival in Tokyo.
This festival is held in honor of three men (Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari, and Hajino Nakatomo), who founded the Sensō-ji temple.
Sanja Festival is held on the third weekend of May and revolve around the parade of three mikoshi (portable shrines) , which is the name of this Festival: San=three(三), Ja=shrine(社)。More than 2 millions people participate to the Sanja Festival every year.
Schedule of the 2022 edition of Sanja Festival:
Day1
20th of May (Fri) : “Dai Gyoretsu” Large parade Asakusa around the town, starting from Tokyo Asakusa Kumai at 1pm
Day2
21st of May (Sat) : Tour of over 100 mikoshis from the 44 districts of Asakusa around the town, start at 1pm
Day3,
22nd of May (Sun) : Tour of the three main mikoshis around the district of Asakusa, starting from the Asakusa shrine in the morning (6am). The mikoshis will return to the shrine in the night (8pm)
During this three festival’s day, all Asakusa area is in festive mood. Due the large amount of people, please watch yourself if you want to attend to the the Festival.
