First visit of the year in a Shrine or Temple in Japan. Traditionally, Japanese people pray for good luck, health and etc… for the new year, from the 1st of January to the 7th, in a ritual called “Hatsumōde”.
The Hatsumōde event is one of the most famous and crowded event in Sensō-ji Temple. Right after the last beat of the Joya-no-Kane (New Year Bell) at midnight 31th, the door of the Temple opens for 2,5 million people every years.
Please, note that during the Hatsumōde period (from December 31th, 22pm to the 3rd of January), the Nakamise shopping street will be a one-way road at daily peak hours.
